The detailed, dark lines found in this Charles Slaybaugh maple sculpture are caused by fungus that creates a spalting effect. Many wood workers seek out wood pieces with spalting because of their unique, characteristic lines. This maple wood was harvested from a fallen tree found in the famous “Black Dirt Region” of Orange County, New York.
There is a small "check" in the wood of the sculpture. A "Check" is a natural crack that appears as the sap wood of the timber shrinks around the heart wood over time. It is not a structural problem and does not effect the stability of the piece. This piece is having a granite base added (see last photo for granite pattern.)
