This piece is carved from a red oak burl that artist Charles Slaybaugh noticed on a dead tree while hiking the Appalachian Trail. Without cutting tools with him, he returned the following day and cut the burl from the tree with a hand saw. The intricate grain pattern in the burl made him think of a paisley design.
